In most Spanish-speaking countries, students and other family members return home to eat lunch together around 2 or 3 in the afternoon.  Lunch is the main meal of the day.  They rest or take a nap after that.

Then they return to work or to school and stay until later in the evening.  Therefore, dinner is going to be eaten around 9 at night.  It will be a light meal.  After that, many people will go out to meet with friends, which might not be until 10 or 11 at night.
