Impulse-Momentum Theorem

Apparatus

      Dynamics cart with motion detector

Bumper spring open with a force sensor mounted to a track

Discussion

• Attach a force sensor to a track. Position a motion detector at the opposite end of track. Give the cart a push toward the force sensor and spring, but stop it before it strikes the spring.

• Predict how the velocity will change when the cart strikes the fixed force sensor and spring (or bumper).

• Start collecting data and gently roll the cart toward the force sensor.

Use the Pasco integrating capability to determine the area under the F vs t curve and then compare that to the change in momentum of the cart.
